I started off with two ~8:20 minutes miles and quickly jumped into a quick pace of 7:11-7:40. I was going for it. All put on the line for Boston and a PR. However, I was only strong enough to hold such fast pace for 17 miles. I crashed and hit the wall shortly after 18 or 19 miles and was extremely disappointed for not getting the 3:15 to qualify. However, I did accomplish something. I never have been able to hold this qualifying pace longer than 12 miles. So this was a huge accomplishment. I also have another state under my belt. So back to the drawing board and hopefully some of you may have a few tips for me. My legs typically get very tired starting at 18 miles. I witness this in all my races. I wanted to start on the weights as I've read that this provides strength and the endurance that's needed well after 20 miles. Any suggestions would be of great help to me. I'm taking a couple of weeks off, then will start training in November for a winter race in February. I'm putting it on the line again for Boston 2008... Another thing is that I run well in the cold temperatures and it got up to 73 during the race on this past Sunday.

Hey great job, this often happens to me in a marathon. But you have to put it on the line if you have lofty goals, it's the only way. Just keep up the marathon pace runs. I lift weights and think it really helps with form in the end miles of the marathon, work on the core and upper body. I don't do alot of lower body because I run and do other thing for that. I do more in the off season.

From Jon on Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 19:58:17

How many long runs did you do before this marathon? And what pace were those runs at?

From Runtough on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 18:13:13

Thanks Josse I will definitely keep going and get stronger.

Jon,

I did perhaps 6 long runs of 15+ prior to Detroit. The pace ranged from 7:20 - 8:30 minutes per mile.

Welcome to the blog! I see you are yet another one of us who are shooting eventually for that sub-3 marathon time. I think that makes at least 6 of us on the blog with that same goal in mind so I would think we can all do a good job motivating and helping each other out.

From Runtough on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 11:33:04

Thanks Tom. I found this site this morning and had to join. I'm struggling right now to qualify for Boston but I can't let my dream die. I love running way too much for that! However I really need to make some adjustments, I just don't know what. I've read books, blogs and magazines, but still not getting it. The only thing I haven't tried is weight training. So I'll add this to my training for my next race in February.

From Tom on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 11:40:46

I think if you'll follow the advice you'll get here you'll get the BQ without much trouble. That being said the advice you get may not necessarily be what you want to hear (it wasn't for me and I resisted for awhile) but I can vouch that what I'm pretty sure Sasha (the creator of the blog and one of many resident running 'gurus') will recommend for you will work if you're willing to commit to putting the required time/miles.

I won't speak for Sasha but I will give you a hint what I think he'll recommend.....the first item of business will be getting you to a point where you are running on average 8 miles a day, 6 days a week. Weights are OK but not required or necessary. Speedwork also not recommended but perhaps just one faster tempo run each week maybe working up to 2 a week after you've done the mileage for quite a few months and gotten accustomed to it.

From Runtough on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 11:55:46

Tom,

That doesn't sound too bad, but not exactly what I thought I would hear. However, I've tried on my own for a couple of years now and have not had luck at qualifying. However, I've had luck getting closer to my PR. How do I get Sasha started with helping me? I ready now!!! Also have you qualified as of yet and do you have a blog address?

From Tom on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 12:04:12

I did finally qualify last year at St. George and ran Boston last April. However I suspect I'm a few years older than you so I only had to get a 3:20 to qualify and I get the impression you need something a bit quicker than that. BTW if you click on my name above the comment it will take you to my blog (tom.fastrunningblog.com)

Usually you'll hear from Sasha pretty quick whether you specifically solicit his help or not. He's very good to take alot of time helping out everyone on the blog. I suspect at some point the blog will get so big he may not be able to help everyone but from what I've seen he's still keeping up pretty well on what most everyone is doing. You can also click on the "Discussion Forum" link which will take you to the forum area. There you will find an area where you can specifically request a personalized review of your training and ask Sasha and whoever else to look over what you've been doing and give you suggestions.

From Dave Holt on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 13:52:43

The ideas Tom said are pretty much right on. The most important thing you can do to help improve your times is to run. If you have been running, run more, run consistently, keep doing it. I am in my 4th year of marathoning and have had a 30 minute improvement (including a little break for health reasons), and I credit all this to continuing to build for years and years.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 15:18:34

Welcome to the blog! Yes, I would agree with Tom and Dave. 6 days a week does magic. My favorite example is my son Benjamin. He does not run very far each day, usually 2 miles, but he never misses a training session. You would think an 8 year old boy with that kind of training would be lucky just to finish a longer race like a 10 K. Not only did he finish, he held the pace, and dropped half of the adult pack that was with him.

I believe that getting out daily even if you go a moderate distance does more for your endurance than getting out only 3-4 times a week and going far. Of course, if you get out 6 days a week, AND go far (you need to build up to that) that is even better. But you start by getting out 6 days a week and just running what is reasonable at a moderate pace, that is something that even a novice can do.

For your post-marathon recovery, if running is still painful, start cross-training. If you can run without severe pain, start running easy ASAP.

From Brent on Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 23:01:36

Welcome to the blog. Tough to train for a winter marathon, good luck. There is very good advice on the blog. I don't know what to offer without more information about your running. I would say, race many half marathons next year to build up your endurance speed is maybe an idea. It worked for me this year.

From Stacy on Fri, Oct 26, 2007 at 19:12:41

Welcome to the blog! It's especially hard to train for a winter marathon in Michigan (I'm assuming your from the Detroit area, since you ran Chicago and Detroit). Good luck!

From haroll01 on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 17:56:02

Thanks Brent and Stacy. I'm from the St. Louis area and typically run Chicago every year. It closed early this year so I went for Detroit. Outdoor winter training will be new for me, but I have a treadmill and will do workouts there also. Hopefully by running six times a day, as suggested, it will get stronger and be able to hold the pace throughout the marathon.

I noticed you have been entering a lot of miles that you report as moderate as VO2 Max. VO2 Max is a very painful pace . True V02 max pace cannot be sustained for longer than 15 minutes. With training it is possible to learn to sustain a decent fraction of it for as long as 30 minutes, so a very well trained runner could put his 10 K race pace as VO2 max as well. A pace that is moderately hard should counts as marathon pace. A pace that you can sustain for an hour in a race counts as threshold. This is also a fairly painful pace, it requires a lot of concentration. 30 minutes at that pace without a prior taper would be a very hard workout.

Based on your race times, I would say your threshold is around 7:00/mile, marathon pace around 7:20 (even though you could not race it as fast due to fuel issues, aerobically it should be around 7:20), and your VO2 max pace is probably around 6:30.

Right now in your training I would focus on running as many miles at around 8:00 - 8:30 pace as your body can handle in a healthy manner. Meaning that when you go for a run it should be the longest possible so that the next day you would not be feeling the consequences of the run the day before, or cumulative fatigue from training in the prior days.

8 miles a day minimum sounds like a good starting point.

Hello Sasha,

First of all congratulations on the Memphis Marathon this month. I haven't checked my charter email in about a month, because I normally do not get messages there. I've updated my FRB address with my yahoo account, which I check daily.

You are so correct in me not posting my workout in the right categories. I am putting in the miles, but there's an error when logging. I had read on the net and I believe a running book that the VO2 was actually 30-60 seconds slower than MP. I guess I was wrong! Thanks for correcting and educating me, that's exactly what I need. I would love to be able to handle as many miles at the 6:30 pace.(laughing) Maybe I'll get there one day.

I can hold the 8-8:30 pace for 18 miles and feel very comfortable for the next workout. You are right in the range of my MP - goal also. At least that is where I want to be to Boston Qualify in February. Should I start logging the miles as easy?

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Dec 04, 2007 at 17:11:50

Yes, if the pace is conversational, the miles should be logged as easy.

12 miles on a treadmill? Better you than me...I did 13 miles once and thought I was going to die (of lack of heat, boredom, mental fatigue, etc.) Great mileage though...you are mentally strong my friend to do this.

From runtough on Mon, Dec 03, 2007 at 23:40:55

Thanks JT.

I've been watching Ryan Hall and Ritz great performances on demand while training. Our guys really put the hammer down during the Olympic trials in NY. As boring as it can be on the treadmill, the viewing gives me great motivation to continue to strive. I thought I wouldn't be able to handle it. But I somehow stayed focus and went for it.

However, my next race will be in the heart of the winter, so many miles will have to occur in the cold. Starting tomorrow morning.

I'm intrigued by your training. I haven't read all your posts but thought I'd offer a comment. You seem to have a lot of strength and a great base for your running, very consistent and strong. You do some speed work in the mile range, I was just wondering if you do anything shorter, like 400s. I'm assuming you're a Master's runner--sorry if I'm wrong. You've got the strength, stamina and speed seem to be the issues. You seem to do a lot of tempo runs too--threshold miles, but I could be wrong. How are your times in the shorter races, and do they match up with your marathon times?

From runtough on Mon, Dec 03, 2007 at 23:46:47

JHorn,

I did train all summer for my fall race and that's when I did the shorter distances on the track. However, I've decided to resume that starting tomorrow morning. My shorter distances do not add up to the marathon. I currently run 19:15 for the 5K, 67 seconds for the 400 and 2:32 for the 800. My issue is that most of the time in the marathon, I fade after mile 18. That's why I'm really working on strength and endurance.

I ran 20 miles today.  It was a great accomplishment for me today as I logged 100 miles for the first time ever.  Although I may not average this on a weekly basis, I do feel comfortable keeping my mileage around 85.  That's up from a 55-60 mile average this past summer.

Great miles this week. With weeks like this and getting even 85 mile weeks consistently will pay huge dividends for your future marathons. My prediction if you do this is that we will see you reach your Boston Qualifier and a sub 3:00 in 2008.

From Adam RW on Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 13:50:43

I have to second the comment above. As long as you keep this consistant mileage sub-3:00 should easily be in reach.

From runtough on Mon, Dec 03, 2007 at 23:49:46

ArmyRunner and Adam,

I thank you both. A sub-3:00 is my lifetime goal and it sounds like music to my ears. I don't know how well I will do in Feb, my next race, but I will be well trained and hopefully healthy at that time. If I continue to train as well as I have the past several weeks and execute my plan, I think I will be happy with the outcome.

Ran a comfortable 11 miles at an 8 minute pace.  The legs were a little tight at the start from yesterday's workout.  However, the tightness disappeared by the third mile.  I felt good enought to go 17 but do not want to push the mileage too fast.  I will do about 4 miles after work as a cool down.  I probably was tight this morning because after the 22 mile workout yesterday morning, I did not do a cool down that evening.  I've learned since joining this blog that the evening short and easy run works wonders on the legs.  It makes the workout the next morning go a lot smoother.

I agree with Cal, I think you might be listing your mileage in the wrong category...52 out 94 miles at VO2max doesn't compute.

One way that I have heard quantification of VO2max pace is the flat out pace you can maintain for 15 minutes. Maybe your fitness has improved to the point that a previous VO2max pace is now your marathon pace.

Cal,

The miles are definitely correct, that was tough work. However, I entered them in the incorrect category. Sasha has educated my on this and it will be corrected moving forward. The training volume should remain close to the same, but the listings will be different. I didn't mean to alarm anyone, but I'm happy to get this straight.

Ran a one mile warm-up, then ran a 15K.  I started off at marathon pace, close to 7:25 average.  Then I picked it up a bit between 6:58 and 7:10.  This felt pretty good until I got to the tough hills.  The course was a 3.5 mile loop and about half was hilly.  I had not trained for this, but given the high mileage that I've been training, gave me the endurance that was needed.  When things got tough, I ran my way through them.

Ran all 12 miles at a moderate 8:30 pace. I didn't want to push it too much because I wanted the pace to be relaxed enough to carry a conversation. I was in a rush to work so did not get the chance to do a cool down. I will run tonight and perform a good cool down at that time.

Returned to the treadmill for an easy 3 mile run.  The miles were performed at 8:45, 8:30 twice.  My legs feel fresh now and looking forward to tomorrow's 800's.

This workout included true VO2 Max!  I started out with a slow warm-up of one mile.  Stretched shortly afterwards for several minutes and took a drink of Gatorade.

2 - 3:13

3 - 3:12

7 - 3:08

8 - 3:10

9 - 3:10

10 - 3:12

11 - 3:12

12 - 3:15

Did a one mile cool down at 7:56.

Good workout, what was your recovery between the Yasso 800s? Your split times seem to indicate your conditioning is set for a marathon PR.

Also, doing 800s on a track by yourself, great workout.

Brent,

The recovery was 45 to 50 seconds.

Great run today.  All miles were logged on the treadmill.  Ran 10 miles with 3 at MP in the AM athen returned after work with another 10 miles easy.

Another good workout this morning.  Started with an easy 8:30 pace and held this for 5 miles.  Soon dropped the pace to 7:30 for the next 8 miles at MP.  The legs started to feel better.

Evening work started out a bit tough.  I was a little tight tonight.  The first two miles were easy at the normal 8:30 pace.  The legs became relaxed towards the end of the second mile, so I increased the pace to my normal 8 minutes per mile.  The  legs felt good at this pace, so I held it for another 6 miles.  I walked for 5 minutes and stretched as a cool down.

Performed 11 easy miles at an 8:30 pace this morning starting at 6AM.  I felt myself enter a zone where it started to feel like I was floating vs running.  This was an awesome feeling.  One I have felt before, but some time ago.  I will probably do a few tonight, in order to feel relaxed for tomorrow big 20!

Performed a challenging log run this weekend.  I was looking forward to the roads and the 35 degree temperature, however as I started out the door, the started also.  This was bad.  I attempted to ride it out, but soon it started to pouring.  I had to settle for 20 miles on the treadmill.  OUCH!!!

The workout wasn't as bad as I thought once it started.  I wanted to train specifically for a marathon type simulation.  I'd read Ryan Hall's blog that he'd performed 5 of this type leading up to the London Marathon.  With me normally fading in the late miles, I figured this type of workout could help me.  The plan was to run the first 10 miles at a 30-40 second slower than marathon pace, then the final 10 at MP.  I knew the first ten would not be an issue, however holding MP for the final miles of the second 10 may be difficult.  As planned, I remained focussed for the first 10, completing in 1:21:45:  an 8:10 pace per mile.  I stopped took another drink of Gatorade and water and restarted the Men's Olympic Trials Race then begin my quest for the 2nd 10.  This pace shocked my legs at first because I probably should've gradually increased the pace on my last one or two miles from the first ten.  However, I settle into the rythm and worked on my form.  I didn't start to feel a little fatigue until mile 18, which is around where I normally loosed focus and the pace falters.  I held it together and the next thing I new I was on mile 19, looking for to 20.  I held a 7:30 pace the entire 10 miles and was extremely pleased with the results.  I hope to do this workout again or maybe twice before my next race.  However, I really want to take this effort to the pavement and again on the hills.  I figure since marathons are ran on the road, my simulation definitely need to be there also.

This was a great weekend Long Run and there's no better place to post my achievements than FRB!!!

I ran 5 miles at a very slow pace:  8:30 per mile.  This felt really relaxed on the legs and was very well needed from yesterday's long run.

As I was on my way to the track and roads, it started to rain, sabotaging my workout.  Since it was 33 degrees, I didn't want to take the chance of catching cold in the rain.  I head back to the treadmill, again.  By the way, this occurred on Saturday morning also, so the 20 miler was on the TM.

Well, I didn't let this get me down.  I jumped on the TM with a goal of 12 miles for the morning.  I ran a constant pace of 8 minues per mile.  I was watching the trials again and this helped me focus on my form and tune-out distractions.  After 4-5 miles, it appears that the pace go very easy and relaxing.  I enjoyed this run and hope to have many like this.  I probably will do 4-6 miles tonight at an easy pace.

Ran another 4 miles as an easy cooldown.  The miles were done at an 8:45 pace.

Did my morning workout on the track this morning.  It was quite foggy and wet but the temperature was a nice 40 degrees.  I ran 10 miles total.  The first miles was at 8:45, very easy.  The next 8 were done at about an 8:05 average.  The last miles was at marathon pace - 7:33.

Enjoyed an easy night 4 mile run at a slow pace.  This felt good.

Had a good early morning 15 miles run.  The bulk of the effort was at an easy-moderate pace.  I started at 8:30 for six miles, picked it up to 8:00 for another six and took it home at MP.  The workout started to get a little tought around 12 but I remained focused and got the job done.

Today's run was a bit tough.  I felt tired and the legs were stiff.  However, I started out 30 seconds faster than my normal for the first few miles.  I was on an 8 min pace for the first 7 then dropped to MP at 7:30.  I'll do a light workout tonight and hopefully feel better. I did feel a little better towards the middle of training.

Completed training this evening with a 5 easy miler.

Long 22 miler today.  The new snowfall sabotaged my run this morning.  Last week, it was the cold rain.  However this did not stop me from training on the treadmill.

All 15 miles were performed at an easy 8:30 pace.  This felt great after the weekend's 22 miler.  I stretched pretty good and did 300 crunches as my cool down.  I need to strengthen the mid section, so I'll be crunching several times a week.  I'll probably run a few miles tonight in preparation for the AM run.

Ran a three mile cooldown.  Very easy pace.

Ran a half-marathon today in 26 degree weather.  The temps were not a problem, but the wind was horrible.  I could barely survive.  I've never run in such cold extremes.  My hands were very cold and the entire process ended in disaster.

I started out way too fast, probably because all the miles that I've been running.  I've only been training this way for 4-5 weeks since joining the blog and I didn't think smart during the race.  I worked with a 6:50-7:10 pace group.  It felt good at first and there were 3 runners blocking the headwind.  I knew this was not my pace, but I felt good and wanted to test my new training.  Unfortunately, I was able to hand for 5 miles, then started to falter.  By mile 8 I was extremely cold, running alone in the fields, and praying to get to the finish line healthy.  I did lots of walking in disgust, partly because my legs were tight and I have to use my body to warm my hands.  My nose and chin felt frozen along with the fingers.  However, the rest of the body felt great!  It's tough to go from here because I'm very disappointed but I've been here before.  So I will just move on.

I have 8 weeks until I run my next marathon and it will be cold.  Perhaps just like today.  I need to learn how to run with high cold winds!!!  Again, the cold weather didn't bother me, just the added wind.  Also since my legs did get tight because I went out to fast, I'm thinking about not doing three weeks of speed work but more endurance mile buildups and include 3 weeks of strength training.  I have the leg speed, but lack the endurance and strength.  If anyone has input on how I can best do this please let me know.  I've been running 90+ miles per week and will do this for another 3 weeks.  Then move to the 3 weeks strength, ending with a 2 week taper.  Any thoughts on particular workouts would be helpful.

I finally stopped being stubborn and went to the emergency room after work today.  I have bronchitis, not good.  I'm taking a day off from work and the next few days off from school.  Hopefully with the steriods this should clear up in a couple of days.  It feels extremely weird not running given that I've dramatically increased my weekly mileage the last 6 weeks.  But I must get well before I can move forward - healthy...
